The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical pattern that occurs naturally in nature. Flower petals, rows of sunflower seeds, and pinecone nubs are just a few of nature’s creations that follow the pattern of each row equaling the sum of the two rows before.

A six-line Fibonacci poem works in the same way with syllable counts of 1,1,2,3,5, and 8 (1+1=2 syllables for the third line, 1+2=3 syllables on the fourth line and so on. If you do not have a math brain (raises hand), don’t let that stop you from trying this fun poetry form. It may sound complicated but it’s just simple addition—with words!

Write your poem on any subject. For a stronger poem, avoid lazy words (the, a, an, and, then).

1 syllable for first line
1 syllable for second line
2 syllables for third
3 syllables for fourth
5 syllables for fifth
8 syllables for sixth
