Picture Haiku: Chrysalis

Spring weather comes early here in Northern California so it’s a great time to venture out to my garden and prepare it for planting. While cleaning up last week, I found a curled leaf on my patio and snapped this picture:

The leaf reminded me of a chrysalis, which got me thinking. Could the leaf have learned about a chrysalis when one hung from a twig on its tree? It was fun to imagine the leaf mimicking what it sees in nature. Strange? Maybe, but the difference between a poet and a nonpoet is in the way we “see” things. Then we try to express our thoughts with words. Here’s my attempt with this picture haiku:

SPEAKING OF HAIKU

Have you checked out my latest book, How Do You Haiku? ? I’m so excited to be able to share fun ways to “haiku” with kids (and adults). Along with simple instructions on modern and traditional haiku, the book is jam-packed with templates and poetry activities for at home and in the classroom. There is an entire chapter on the form of the picture haiku in this book!

  1. Beautiful! At first I thought the leaf was a chrysalis! And you know this is one of my favorite forms of haiku! 🙂 I don’t find many of those, but I do find praying mantis egg nests. Not sure of their name, but a hard foamy mass encasing eggs. Fascinating to watch them hatch.
