Are you familiar with the Diamante poem? This poem is shaped like a “diamond” and illustrates the transition from one idea to its opposite in just seven lines. Writers can explore different themes and feelings, gaining insight into both sides of the spectrum. Its simplicity and charm make the Diamante poem a fun choice for poets of all levels.
THE EXAMPLE:
Here is how the shape and transition look when completed using the subjects of Fire and Ice. Notice that I’ve included a hyphen where I’ve started my transition (it is placed there as a guide for instruction purposes. Your poem does not need the hyphen).
THE RULES
No rhyming allowed! Just nouns, adjectives, and “-ing” verbs.
THE BLUEPRINT
- Lines 1 through 3 focus entirely on Topic A.
- Line 4 is your bridge (transitioning)
- Lines 5 through 7 shift entirely to Topic B.
