Join the Fun on Poem in Your Pocket Day: April 29th! —Includes Downloadable Poems

Hey poetry poppers!

April is officially National Poetry Month, which means we’re all reading a little more, maybe scribbling in our journals a bit more often, and generally soaking up the literary vibes. But there is one specific day in April (the 29th this year) that I look forward to every single year because it’s just so fun!

I’m talking about Poem in Your Pocket Day!

A denim pocket adorned with various colorful stickers, holding a note card that reads 'poem in your pocket day'.

Wait, what is it?

If you’re new to the tradition, here’s the scoop: It started back in 2002 in New York City and became a nationwide thing by 2008. The premise is simple. You pick a poem you love, print it or write it out, tuck it into your pocket (or purse, or phone case), and carry it with you all day.

The goal? To share it. With anyone. The barista, your coworker, the person sitting next to you on the bus or in line at the store—it’s all about spreading the joy of language in small, bite-sized moments.

Why You Should Join the Fun

In a world that feels pretty digital and fast-paced, there is something special about having a physical piece of art tucked away in your jeans. It’s like a little secret you’re carrying around, waiting for the right moment to reveal.

Plus, it’s a low-pressure way to be a “poetry person.” You don’t have to give a formal reading or analyze a sonnet; you just have to say, “Hey, I found this cool poem, want to hear it?”

Need a Suggestion?

If you’re stuck on what to carry, don’t overthink it! It could be a classic Mary Oliver piece, a funny Shel Silverstein rhyme, or even a few lyrics from a song that moves you. If it speaks to you, it’s worth carrying.

I’ve written a few of my poems on tiny slips of paper here if you’d like to use them for Poem in you Pocket Day, feel free to download and share!

So, what are you tucking away this year? Drop your chosen poem title in the comments below! I’m still deciding between a haiku and something a bit more “springtime moody.”

Happy carrying, everyone!
