From ancient Japanese traditions to today’s modern versions, haiku has come a long way. While the form has evolved over centuries, 2026 is officially the year of the haiku app! These tools make it easy to write on the go or jump into a collaborative renga with friends anywhere in the world. I’m so excited to share a wonderful, newly released renga app with you all!

Renga, a new iPhone app, invites users to turn their year into poetry through a simple daily ritual:
writing one haiku each day. Over time, these short poems form a visual calendar: A personal
portrait of the year captured in verse.
Inspired by traditional Japanese renga structure, the app also enables collaborative poem chains
that alternate between three-line and two-line verses. Participants contribute one verse at a time,
sharing the poem through simple file exchange rather than social feeds or cloud accounts.
About the App
- Renga is a quiet space for daily poetry.
- Each day you are invited to write a short poem—a haiku—creating a living calendar made of moments, seasons, and small observations.
- You can also create renga collaborative poem chains, where verses are written together, slowly, across time and distance.
- There are no feeds, no likes, no pressure. Just words, days, and shared attention.
A Conversation with the Developer
While discussing the Renga app with its developer, Arto Ushan, he explained that the core feature was born from the collaborative spirit of traditional linked-verse poetry. “I liked the idea of poetry moving gently between people,” Ushan noted, “not through social feeds, but through intentional sharing.” He invites you to experience this connection firsthand by downloading the free app today. You can download the press release here.
Don’t Have an iPhone?
Don’t have an iPhone? No worries—I’ve got you covered! I tested out several haiku apps for Android, and Jamverse is hands-down my favorite. It’s different from the Renga app as there isn’t a collaborative Renga poem chain feature, however, it’s a collaborative poetry app with prompts and a way to connect to others globally. Regardless of your device, you can now take your poetry on the road!
