Paint Chip Poetry: I am Grateful

Don’t tell the home improvement stores, but I have been writing poems with their paint chips for over 20 years.

In fact, poets and teachers worldwide have used this creative technique in their writing for decades. Chronical Books has come out with a wordplay game called; you guessed it “Paint Chip Poetry” that comes with prompt cards to get you started. I purchased the game and have enjoyed using it alone and with groups of friends.

Today’s prompt is “I Am Grateful.” Normally, I’d write a poem using the color card names, but today I went rouge and pulled ten random paint chips to help me make a list of some of the things I appreciate.

My Paint chips

  1. marigold
  2. fresh butter
  3. the whole enchilada
  4. blank canvas
  5. warm glow
  6. thistle
  7. grass stain
  8. zephyr
  9. mustard seed
  10. patina

my list

I am grateful for…

  • A marigold sunrise and a cup of hot tea.
  • Indulging in fresh butter on a warm croissant.
  • A Zephyr that seems to always soothes my soul.
  • Playful days that leave grass stains on my jeans.
  • The mustard seed of hope for the future.
  • Prickly thistle where butterflies begin their journey.
  • A blank canvas to start each new day.
  • The warm glow of a candle lit dinner with my honey.
  • The experiences and patina of my life.
  • For these things I am grateful. And for everything… the whole enchilada!

now it’s your turn!

Use my paint chip list above or collect your own to write a poem or make a “I am Grateful List.” Sometimes you’ll pull cards that seem impossible to write about, but don’t sweat it. Use your imagination and do your best, perfection aside, to work the color names into your list or poem.

  1. I LOVE it! And I’ll let you in on a rubber stamper secret: I’ve also been using those paint chip samples for years to make cards. 🙂 I usually focus more on the colors, but I love the idea of using the actual names for poems! Love your poem!

    1. Thank you, Angie. Oh, that’s perfect! Such a range of beautiful colors for card making! Yes, give a paint chip poem a go, it’s tons of fun!
