I can hardly believe it, but my 63rd birthday is just around the corner. To be honest, I’ve been sitting with that number for a few days, letting it settle. In a world that’s always telling us to stay “sharp” or “tough,” reaching sixty-three feels a little different. It feels… gentler.

Memorial Haiku: Happy Birthday, Dad

Today would have been my dad’s 85th birthday. He was a lifelong falconer, so it seemed fitting that a hawk chose the day Dad passed away to circle the sky above me in grand, sweeping loops as it sang to the sky. It felt as if my dad finally had his wings and was saying goodbye. Four years later, I still think of my dad when I see a bird of prey (I’m sure I always will). I wrote this haiku in remembrance of him. Happy Birthday, Dad, from your chickadee.

Happy Birthday Acrostic

Today is my Birthday. I’m at that point where I’m far from young, but I’m not quite old (unless you ask my children). And although I curse the wrinkles and reading glasses, I embrace aging as I know it’s a privilege denied to many. So today, in honor of birthdays, I’m resharing this acrostic poem.
