Best Holiday Gifts for Poets: Poetry Pop Shop

There are just 35 days until Christmas but you still plenty of time to shop online for the poet, reader, and writer in your life. I’ve gathered a handful of my favorite gift ideas that are sure to bring joy to the creative soul at Christmas time or any time.

tIGER, tIGER, bURNING bRIGHT!

A lavishly illustrated collection of 366 animal poems–one for every day of the year! The perfect book for children (and grown-ups!) to share at the beginning or end of the day. Filled with favorites and new discoveries written by a wide variety of poets, including William Blake, Christina Rosetti, Carl Sandburg, Grace Nichols, Matsuo Basho, Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, and many more.

The book is large, and the cover is eye-catching and feels good to the touch with a cloth bound spine and back cover. I’ve wanted to own this book for a long time and was finally able to buy it. It’s a bit pricey but worth every penny to this poetry lover! Gift this book to your favorite poetry lover and see their eyes light up!

POETIC CANDLES

These candles from Fly Paper Products smell so yummy! I bought “The Poet” from a local bookstore, but when I burned it down to the bottom and went back for more, they were sold out. I tracked the candles down on Esty and found the 9 oz. Soybean/wax blend candle came in many other fragrances and styles, including Book Lover, Sexy Librarian, Book Club, The Artist, The Philosopher, Hemingway, Dickens, and more!

POETRY POCKET BOOKS

These small pocket books of poetry classics are packed with big design. Beautifully illustrated by Evan Robertson, each poem is a visual treat! Each book sold by ObviousState contains one poem. My favorite is “Hope is the Thing” by Emily Dickinson where the artist has written the poet’s words on the wings of a bird. Choose from poems by John Keats, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Henry David Thoreau, and more! Printed in black/white/cream on beautiful matte paper, this petite gift book (4.5″ x 6”) is perfect for poetry and art lovers alike. Buy several to bundle as a gift or stuff one in the holiday stocking of a loved one.

EMBROIDERED NOTEBOOKS

What poet doesn’t love a special notebook? These beautiful notebooks come in many different design options to choose from. The inside page options include white or cream-colored pages, lined or blank. The Makers at this Etsy shop also takes custom orders if you want to include a special embroidered message on the front cover. What could be better that? Free gift wrapping is included!

LITTLE BOX OF MAGNETIC POETRY

A cute little tin (about the size of a Altoids mint tin) filled with happy words! The perfect way to fill someone’s fridge door or filing cabinet with happiness. Each kit contains 72 themed magnetic word tiles packaged in a small, giftable, shrink-wrapped tin container. Rearrange the words to write poems and messages. They’re not just fridge words, you can write an ode on your commode, an elegy on your doorknob, a haiku on your car hood, or a novelette on your omelet maker.

The kit comes in different themes including, Little Box of Peace, Little Box of Awesome, Little Box of Sin, Little Box of Fa La La Christmas, Little Box of Love, Little Box of obscenities, Little Box of Passion, Little Box of Faith, Little Box of Encouragement, Little Box of Zodiac Signs and more. With about 100 themed kits, here is a Little Box of Magnetic Poetry for everyone! Grab several kits to get a larger word pool (Love tin + Passion tin etc.). Makes a great stocking stuffer!

EMILY DICKINSON TOTE BAG

This pretty canvas tote with Emily DickInson’s poem, Hope is the Thing with Feathers makes a thoughtful holiday gift for the poet in your life. Comes in three sizes. Tuck a notebook, a pen, and some dark chocolate inside for a lovely holiday gift bundle.

PAINT CHIP POETRY GAME

Poets and teachers worldwide, me included, have used this creative technique in their writing for decades. The wordplay goes like this: Gather paint chip samples from the hardware store, place them face down, select 10 colors and write a poem using the names of the colors. It’s great fun and you can come up with so many interesting poems or stories. It’s a popular technique, so I wasn’t surprised to find a new game by Chronical Books called…you guessed it, Paint Chip Poetry. It’s the same game we’ve played forever, only it’s in a colorful, compact kit with everything you need, including paint chips and prompts.

POETRY BOOKS FOR KIDS

This poetic lift-the-flap board book features haiku about hidden woodland animals, plus flaps that reveal those animals!

Warm breezes blowing,
pond open for summer fun—
slip, slide, belly ride!
(Peek-a-boo, OTTER!)

Each haiku in this lift-the-flap board book will have readers guessing the animal it describes—with the answer revealed under a flap on each page! With lovely text, sweet illustrations, and cute creatures, this lyrical and interactive book is a joy to read and gift to your little ones!
