Breaking Up with Winter: A Poetic Reflection

Here in northern California we enjoyed a few warm days, where the sun painted the landscape in vibrant colors and coaxed us outdoors, but this week we are back to windy, rainy weather that feels relentless and dreary. You might feel the same way wherever you live, enduring the lingering chill and gray skies, so I say we break up with winter (Dear John style), put on our brightest smiles, and look forward to the blooming of spring. With this thought in mind, I’ve written a poem reflecting our collective longing for warmth and renewal. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Breaking Up with Winter

Dear Winter,

You’ve tried your best
to impress.

Your snowflake dance
beneath the light
of the full moon,
the frosty love notes
you etch on my windowpane,
and that one night,
high on a mountain top,
when you kissed my cheeks pink.

You’ve caught my eye
a thousand times.
All your blowing,
and showing off
outside my door
while I sip tea
and slipper my way
through your blustery moods.

I hope you don’t find my words cold,
but I no longer want you here
with your gray skies,
and chilly breath.

For I am madly in love with Spring.

speaking of spring…

As you may know, besides poetry, I have a passion for writing for children, which has always been a significant part of my creative journey. I am excited to share that this year marks the release of three new books, all available now for young readers to explore. These delightful stories are crafted with care and imagination, each embodying a springy, lovely feeling that encourages joy and giving. Click on the covers to learn more about each book, and join me in celebrating the magic of storytelling (and spring!) for the younger generation.

You can also see my full bookshelf of over 25 books on my children’s book website.

Thanks for popping in

  1. What a lovely poem! We are getting a deluge of rain, which I know we will need later this summer. But sunny skies will return! And 3 books this year! Congratulations!
