The Art of Palm Reading and Poetry: Alphabet Poems

I recently read a poem by Jane Yolen (forgive me, I can’t remember the name of the poem) and there was a line, midpoint, that read “the alphabet of death.” That line struck a chord with me. This is the poem that came of that lightning bolt.

The Alphabet of Life

A gift to
Be sure.
Clues to our
Destiny are secretly
Etched in our palms.
From day one, we were
Given a map of our lives,
Handed to us in plain sight.
Inside curled fists, lines,
Jutting and curving this way and that .
Knowing your future takes a long, studied
Look.
Mounts and Plains predict life themes,
Notice your love line, heart line, lifeline, all
Open to interpretation.
Palm lines can change over time, making the
Quest for a different path achievable
Read with care, all the
Signs are there.
The mount of Venus, the plain of Mars,
Use them as a guidebook for life.
Very long ago, Aristotle said, “Lines are not
Written into the human hand without reason.”
X out any uncertainties with this “hand”y map.
Youth to old age—
Zero surprises.

    1. Thank you, Angie. Yes, a favorite for kids with a child friendly theme. Writing from A-Z can be challenging sometimes. However, you can really stop at any letter for a shorter poem.

  1. I love how this poem ties together the art of palmistry with the flow of life. It’s fascinating how each line builds upon the theme, much like how our experiences shape our paths. The idea of using palm lines as a guidebook for life is both poetic and thought-provoking!

  2. Hi there, I appreciate you popping in! Thank you for the kind words. Once I got the idea, I worried it would be too difficult to write but I enjoyed the challenge. 🙂 I’ve always been fascinated by the art of palmistry!
