Guest Pop: The Poetry of Bakhtiyar Hidayat

I’m delighted to introduce a dedicated subscriber and poet, Bakhtiyar Hidayat, for today’s Guest Pop. Joining us all the way from Azerbaijan, Bakhtiyar reminds us of the magic of the digital age—allowing us to share poetry and build community with friends across oceans and time zones.

Highway

Billboards on the roadside—
2 km to such-and-such restaurant,
3 km to such-and-such gas station,
5 km to such-and-such village, and so on.

And the portraits of martyrs.
But beside those portraits,
A device that can measure
The distance to eternity—
Has yet to be invented.

For Alissa White-Gluz

Queen of metal songs,
A delicate voice, yet a woman of iron.

But iron is in the 26th place in the Mendeleev table,
While you are in the first place among the stars of the world.

It is said in religion that
Iron was sent down from the sky.
You too are an angel sent down from the sky,
And what you sing is like a holy verse.

Your hair is blue, like the skies,
Your voice is the sound of thunder, the sound of lightning.
Greetings to you,
O descended from the heavens,
Woman of iron.
