The bond with a sister is truly something special. It’s a relationship woven with shared history, steady support, and an understanding that often is hard to put into words. On National Sister’s Day, I’d like to take this moment to honor that connection through poetry.

I live in a different state than my two sisters, but I think of them every day. I’m grateful for cell phones and social media that help us stay connected. We have a tradition called “gift of the day,” where we randomly pick small items with special meaning and mail them to each other. It’s fun to receive a thoughtful surprise and it keeps us close despite the distance. I wrote the poem below inspired by a gift for the day from years ago.
A Gift from My Sister
An orange bundle
of silk tulips
rests on my kitchen table
in a green potter's vase.
A gift from my sister
five years ago
and still as brilliant
as a California sunset.
Each morning,
a reason to rejoice,
petal soft
as a sister's love.
